“It’s All About Tomatoes” from Food Fight (Water Balloon Battle) to Cooking at the USDA Farmers Market at Night this Friday, July 22, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Where:  USDA Farmers Market, 12th and Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington, DC

When:   Friday, July 22, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Water balloon battle at 5:30 p.m.

Early in the sixteenth century the Spaniards took the tomato plant to Europe where it gradually spread into Mediterranean cuisine. At the end of the eighteenth century it was introduced into the United States from Europe. Today, in the small town of Buñol in eastern Spain, the tomato is celebrated every August with La Tomatina: The Tomato Festival. Thousands of people participate by throwing tomatoes at one another – imagine a modern day water balloon fight with tomatoes.

In honor of this purely fun 70 year tradition, this Friday, July 22, the USDA Farmers Market at Night will host a watered-down version of the Spanish tomato festival with a water balloon battle at 5:30 p.m.

For those not keen on throwing food (or balloons), learn how to grow and cook with tomatoes instead.
