June 6th, Washington: New promotions, including Five Dollar Customer Gift Certificates, were announced today for the U Street Flea, 10 to 5 every Saturday and Sunday at 912 U St, NW.
The announcement, which also included the flea’s participation in a special “Shaw Open House” program 2 to 5 p.m. this Saturday and the scheduled launch of the area’s first permanent stop for the D C Fashion Truck Tour (DCFTT) beginning Sunday, June 22.
The gift certificates will first be given Saturday to participants in “Passport Shaw,” the open house event sponsored by Shaw Main Streets which serves the NW Washington neighborhood for which it’s named. The annual free event highlights 30 participating businesses, all of which will be giving freebies to visitors including food, beer, wine and cocktail samples; recyclable shopping bags and chances to win free prizes donated from each business.
“DMM always tries to work with local non-profits such as those in the Main Streets program and Business Improvement Districts throughout the region whenever possible,” said Michael Berman who made the announcement, “We’re pleased to be promoting the Shaw neighborhood now. The gift certificates, which we’ll also circulate at our other venues and throughout the Shaw neighborhood, will be redeemable with our U Street exhibitors for the rest of the season.”
He said they can also be used for purchases from the fashion trucks, which intend to establish a Sunday home base at the U Street Flea beginning June 22. “We weren’t even aware there was an association of fashion truck operators until DCFTT approached us a few weeks ago about promoting U Street Flea as a weekly venue for its members. Of course we welcomed the collaboration. It sounded like a no-brainer!”
Fashion trucks are mobile boutiques, complete with dressing rooms, where you can purchase anything from a necklace to a whole wardrobe. Donna Hundley, founder of Curvy Chix Chariot which specializes in “Plus Size Fashions” for women, is one of the organizers of DCFTT and “promises to promote a full range of fashionable sizes throughout the other trucks,” said Berman.
He noted that fashion truck tour hours will be 11 to 4, slightly less than the normal flea. The opening tour Sunday is also expected to feature a DJ and other surprises.
