VeraCruz is what would happen nine months after a gallery and a bar made liquored-up, experimental freak love: a vaguely Latin hybrid lined with wood drink rails under buyable work from a new artist every two months, and sporting a 15ft drink station and DJ booth, all located right above Duffy’s, not that they’re saying art’s above the Irish or anything. 100% of the sales go straight to the artist, and you can currently line the pockets of one Brandon Hill, a DC native flooding the joint with mixed media pieces like a series of maple leaves imbued with prints of Mustang fighter planes and wrestlers’ faces, and a bunch of skate decks cut into a claw and dubbed “Maryland Crab”, a name that really should’ve been a piece of cake. As for the whole drinking part, there’s a host of South American beers like Mexico’s Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Bohemia (don’t worry about trying to pronounce the whole name… just ask for a Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma), Xingu Black from Brazil, and Presidente, the Dominican’s national beer.
If beauty makes you hungry, they’ve got on-site goodness from Mama Chuy’s down the street, like chips & guac, and pork tacos with caramelized pineapple, Mexican food being one area in which you’re more than capable of holding your own.
