Bazaar Spices | Bringing Flavor, Health, and Soul to DC
On narrow Incan trails along the peaks of the Peruvian Andes, or inside a thriving, bustling market in Cairo, Egypt, the vibrant colors and smells delightfully awaken your senses. In the lively bazaars of New Delhi, India, where merchants sell goods that have been used to flavor food and heal ailments for thousands of years, captivating scents permeate the air around you. Where in Washington, DC can you engage all of your senses and be transported from one country to another in just a few steps?
Located in the newly renovated Union Market in Northeast Washington DC, Bazaar Spices is a unique, locally-owned and independently-operated shop surrounded by earthy baskets filled with a wide variety of spices, herbs, and botanicals from around the world, and whenever possible, from local growers, to enlighten the mind, body, and soul.
Whimsical, playful jars spread throughout the shop encourage customers to smell the authentic spice blends and peak their curiosity. Bazaar Spices offers a colorful, warm, and friendly learning environment that encourages its customers not only to ask questions but also to share their knowledge, with the goal of building a destination in DC for those who want to explore culinary and healing traditions in their own kitchens and homes.
Ivan Fitzgerald and Monica Grover, the creators of Bazaar Spices, have lived in the DC community for over 10 years. They each recently left the corporate and nonprofit worlds to pursue thier entrepreneurial dreams. Witnessing how local markets contribute to the fabric of a community and how the spice and herb shop, alongside the butcher and the baker, forms the foundation of these markets, they were inspired to launch Bazaar Spices. Being fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit spice markets in the four corners of the world, they gained a deep understanding of the role markets play in cultivating a strong sense of community.
Through Bazaar Spices, they seek to replicate a feeling of purpose and interconnectedness in its DC community and share their appreciation for authentic regional foods—in particular, the spices and herbs that are used in so many traditional dishes and healing remedies. Coming from families that incorporated holistic traditions and gardening into their lives, they have a strong connection to nature that they hope to share with their customers.
Bazaar Spices is opened Wednesday-Friday, 11am-8pm, Saturday and Sunday, 8am-8pm and can be found online at and .
