ANS’ 35th Annual Birdathon Starts April 22

Audubon Naturalist Society’s 35th Annual Bloomin’ Birdathon starts Earth Day, April 22 and runs through Memorial Day, May 25, 2015.

“The birdathon is a great way to get out into nature and help ANS at the same time,” said ANS Director of Development Jacky Wershbale. “We count on the generous support we receive during the birdathon to fund our local conservation and environmental education programs throughout the year.”

Each spring, ANS hosts this annual fundraising event where individuals or teams count as many wildflower or bird species as they can in one 24-hour period over the course of the month-long Birdathon event. Sponsors pledge or donate to ANS based on the numbers counted. Participation is open to all, as counters or sponsors.

New this year!  ANS has also added even more ways to participate through special Birdathon events:

•       Bird House Build Off Contest. A bird house building contest, this competition is open to all ages. Contestants may enter on-site at the Audubon Naturalist Shop or online at anshome.org/Birdathon.  The entry fee is $10 per bird house.  Bird houses will be displayed and voting will take place, both online and on-site, over the course of the Birdathon, April 22 through May 25.  Prizes will be awarded in June in the following categories: Most Votes; Most Creative; Best Design for Birds; Best Design by Child (12 years and younger); Best Upcycled Bird House. For all the contest rules and guidelines see anshome.org/Birdathon.

•       A Big Sit for ANS.  Wednesday, April 29, 2015 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, novice birders can get their Bloomin’ Birdathon counts completed while taking a load off and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow birders.

•       Bird Eggstravaganza! A fun family friendly egg hunt, Sunday, May 3, 2015, 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm. Hunt for “bird eggs” hidden around Woodend Nature Sanctuary filled with treats and prizes.

•       The Big Year Screening.  It’s movie night, Friday, May 8, 2015 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. ANS will screen “The Big Year,” starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, a comedy about two birding enthusiasts who are trying to defeat the cocky, cutthroat world record holder in a year-long bird-spotting competition.

All Birdathon events take place at ANS headquarters, Woodend Nature Sanctuary, 8940 Jones Mill Road in Chevy Chase. Participation fees from $10 to $35. Online event registration encouraged. To register and for more, visit anshome.org/Birdathon.
