Deliciously Local – Bakers & Baristas
In the Penn Quarter area near the Verizon Center, the “Proudly Independent Locally Owned” sign outside of Bakers & Baristas on 7th Street, NW is sight for sore eyes…and grumbly bellies. The delightful treats waiting within bright space have appeased many a local since its opening in late January, and some wise tourists too.
Located across the street from that large corporate coffee shop chain known for its green logo, Bakers & Baristas (B&B) is proud to be a DC original. All of the baked goods they sell are made on-site and the coffee served to accompany their delicacies is roasted by Compass Coffee just a few blocks away. They source their milk products from a family farm in Pennsylvania and recently started featuring Udderly Nuts almond milk produced locally at Union Kitchen.
According to General Manager Tracy Wilson, the B&B concept is “Vienna inspired, but locally adapted.” B&B is committed to quality and freshness, which results in a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week operation. Baking production starts early…or late, depending on your perspective. Every night at 11pm when the doors close to customers, the chefs start dough prep for the next day’s pastries, cookies, tarts and other goodies. To make a proper croissant, for example, an 11 hour prepping and baking process is required. So after a night of preparation and baking, the day’s baked goods are ready when doors open at 7am (Monday through Friday) or 9am (Saturday and Sunday).
“We believe in a simple formula of excellent service, high quality and local ingredients,” explains Wilson. From pastries to cookies to desserts and the coffee, B&B does simple exceptionally well. To walk into B&B is to have a complete sensory experience of smell, sight and sound….all before taking one bite or sip. Once you dive into the light flaky croissant, oohey-goohey meringue, melt-in-your-mouth cinnamon bun, buttery cookie or decadent tart you too will become a devotee of B&B’s version of simple and local!
So the next time you are looking for a special treat, stop by B&B to check out the day’s delightful offerings. Be sure to tell them that Laura sent you!
