Tony Award Winner Brings “Conscious Pop” To D.C.
—-Great Balls Of Fire, Levi Kreis is Flying Solo…
Washington D.C. – 2010 Tony Award Winner Levi Kreis may be known for originating the role of Jerry Lee Lewis in the Broadway hit Million Dollar Quartet which visited the Kennedy Center this winter, but Kreis may be more akin to Lewis’s preaching cousin Jimmy Swaggart when off Broadway.
Kreis has gained international recognition for his own recordings, with prominent features on The Vampire Diaries, Sons of Anarchy, The Apprentice, and appearing on The View, David Letterman, and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon: a notable success for someone who chooses to rebel against the corporate music scene to
focus on what he calls “conscious pop.”
“I grew up in East Tennessee hearing the same old hymns that Jerry Lee sang. I remember recording Jimmy Swaggart songs off the television to perform in church. I always wanted to be a gospel singer but in a language where all faiths and all religions could come to the table and enjoy being encouraged.” I guess I started calling it “conscious pop” because it doesn’t fit into any existing box. I aspire to entertain and give spiritual, life affirming musical encouragement in a language any faith can understand.”
The Flying Solo Tour is exactly what it suggests, Levi and a piano, kicking off in Chicago and touring through NYC, DC, Raleigh, Knoxville, and Atlanta.
The Chicago Tribune gives Kreis’ solo performance “5 stars.” Countless reviews site the vulnerability with which he speaks of his past, growing up gay in the religious south, overcoming drug addiction, and what led him to being a soon-to-be licensed spiritual practitioner and aspiring reverend. He infuses a charm and southern humor that reminds you Kreis’ is a just a good natured product of the East Tennessee hills. But there is a lot more to the man who brought Great Balls of Fire to Broadway, and he hope D.C. is ready to know the heart and soul of the piano man known as Levi Kreis.
