Chicago’s Great Divide is a rock ‘n ’soul band full of passion, spontaneity and groove and just released their self-titled, sophomore record. The group’s horn-inflected; soulful vibe has been a staple from day one: Think Motown meets Muscle Shoals, stoppin’ by Stax on the way up to Levon’s Ramble.  ARTISTdirect recently premiered a free download of lead track, “Ain’t No Roads.”
Performer Magazine attests Great Divide is, “Rock n’ soul custom-made for a sweaty live setting.”
Fitting, as the band is on the road supporting their new album and comes to DC9 on TUES, MAY 7th.
Last Month, Great Divide had opportunity to record a few songs at the legendary Chicago Recording Company and paid homage to their influences with a performance of “Don’t Do It,” inspired by The Band’s cut of Marvin Gaye’s 1964 smash.  Enjoy the video http://dld.bz/cwGD2 and audio http://dld.bz/cwGD7 and feel free to post.
Great Divide evokes memories of the classic Americana of The Band…
The romanticism in the instrumentation of this Chicago-based band makes Great Divide an authentic heir to the bands the members love

Ostensibly a horn-driven soul-pop band, the quintet that is Great Divide are arguably one of
roots music’s up-and-comers.

“Great Divide is a evocative, soulful rock n’ roll record in the old fashioned way. In other words, it is as smooth as you like, bringing together a veritable buffet of influences, spanning soul, folk, country, pop and rock with the dynamic horn section providing the proverbial icing on top.”

Great Divide was produced by Dan McMahon and Darren Garvey (Cory Chisel) and engineered by

James Auwarter (Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna, John Legend), who also recruited some gospel singers from the Chicago’s South Side to sing on the album.  The track “Fast Train” features up-and-coming Ann Arbor/Brooklyn musician Theo Katzman and the final icing on the cake came from local brass-men dubbed, “HornBread,” part of an up and coming Chicago hip hop/soul/jazz band Sidewalk Chalk.
