As a music talent scout years ago for a major record label, I would have occasion to listen to all kinds of local as yet undiscovered bands and artists. It was only until I had listened to many many acts that I begin to mature my thinking about how music affects us individually. I came to realize that every song I had ever heard contributed to my collective memory. Whether we like the genre, the beat, the vocals, or not; every single time we listen to one song it adds to this process in our souls. There is an accumulation over time, and we are all influenced by each song we hear. At least that is my theory.
Little did I know while watching all those local indie bands that they were adding to the character of the music scene. I was doing my part to scout them, they were doing their part by playing and working; and the process of listening to Indie music instead of mass produced commercial stuff adds to each city’s character. I have memories of New Orleans, Boston, Atlanta, and dozens of other places, which have stayed with me – those memories have been shaped by the music as much as the food, people, scenery and parties.
Take a moment to consider what you are doing to support the local music scene here in DC. Please come out and enjoy a show with this wonderful fresh concept in Adams Morgan. Let the local DC Indie artists shape your memories, mold your listening ear, and join the fun!
