Description: Target Gallery presents Trash Talk, an exhibition that focuses on everyday common objects that are reclaimed, recycled, reinterpreted, and transformed into art. (Alexandria, VA) The Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery presents Trash Talk, which opens on April 10th and runs through April 28th, 2013. From Marcel Duchamp’s “ready-mades” to Robert Rauschenberg’s “combines”, there is a deep history in artists recycling and reclaiming everyday common objects and transforming them into something new and unique.
The juror for Trash Talk is Maren Hassinger, Director of the Rinehart School of Sculpture at Maryland Institute College of Art. Hassinger selected a wide range of work, from small wall pieces to large-scale installations. The work is made from a variety of mediums including old computer circuit boards, found bottle caps, burned newspaper, and much more – making it clear that one’s trash truly is another’s treasure, and in this case art.
The exhibit will look at how artists across the country and the world are taking every day items we often consider trash and reinventing them in a way that elevates them to art. Brooklyn-based artist Alex Lockwood will show his piece Garden an installation of flower-like structures made from thousands of found lottery tickets that he has been collecting off the streets for years throughout neighborhoods near his home. Latvian artist Inguna Gremzde’s piece, No Moment the Same 5, consists of a series of landscapes inside of plastic bottle caps. This interesting juxtaposition creates an intimate framework for these delicate paintings, but also opens a dialogue between these rural scenes and the use of mass-produced consumer materials, giving new meaning to the phrase “trash talk.”
