What shows to see in DC this Spring and Summer

Broadway is something that people in DC love.  Numerous shows have begun here including Pippin and West Side Story and after taking off made their way to NYC.  As a hub for testing like the revival of Follies or even helping to bring new shows to life; there are plenty of great choices to see this coming spring and summer.  The trick to getting good seats is to book them in advance, so here are a few shows you may want to order tickets for now.

Anything goes The Kennedy Center – Great for teenagers and adults; Anything Goes is a classic styled show with catchy music and amazing dance routines.  You’ll recognize some of the songs and leave the theater tapping your feet.  A funny and easy to watch show, this comedy is perfect for date night or just a fun trip for the family.

The Book of Mormon The Kennedy Center – Not for the easily offended, this look at the Mormon Religion by the creators of South Park will take you from the Kennedy Center to Africa while Elder Price and Elder Cunningham try to convert the Africans to becoming Mormon.  With offensive but funny songs, characters that will have you laughing, this show for adults is absolutely ideal for a night out with friends or even for a date.  Hurry and buy your tickets early as this one is guaranteed to sell out fast.

Next to Normal – The Alden Theatre – Opens in February.  This show is about mental disorders (being Bi-Polar) and more for adults.  The music is gorgeous and the story is sad but will leave you happy.  If you’ve ever dealt or had to watch someone go through being Bi-Polar, this show is the perfect one to help you understand what that person was feeling.  Some of the songs from it include “I’m Alive” and “I Miss the Mountains”.  This is a must see show if you like shows that make you think and also have a great score.

Hello Dolly – Ford’s Theatre – This classic show is the perfect one for a night out.  With past leads like Carol Channing and Barbara Streisand, the show is packed full of amazing music like “Hello Dolly” and “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”.  This fun and up-beat musical will leave you smiling and wanting to become a role model just like Dolly.  Perfect for the entire family, this is a great show for anyone of all ages.

Spamalot – National Theatre – In pure Monty Python fashion, this show pokes fun and parodies one of Monty Python’s more classic movies, “The Holy Grail”.  Don’t worry ladies, even if you hate Monty Python, you’ll love this show.   One thing that makes Spamalot unique is that they tailor the show to each city they are in with custom jokes and dialogue.  One of my favorites is a joke about the local museums.  You’ll have to watch and listen for them to poke fun at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

Washington DC always has a new show to see.  Filled with tons of theaters and things to see, you’ll always have something fun coming through.  If there aren’t shows you want to see currently running, you can always check out a show tunes sing a long event like Curtain Call at MOVA lounge every Sunday evening hosted by VJ Jon.  A second option is JRs Bar and Grille on Mondays, but they don’t really get going until 11.
