TIME FOR SOMETHING NEW

Elmore Leonard recently passed away. I only met him once, but I learned a lot reading his books. While he had many admirable traits, I learned one new thing about him after his death: He didn’t write his first bestselling novel until he was sixty—60—years old.
He tried something new. And it proved that in the case of writing, age is not a barrier or an obstacle. But the lesson he taught in this by example is that we’re never too old or too anything else. If we’re breathing, we have opportunity, and opportunity exists for all who choose to take it.
If you don’t like something in your life, then it’s time for something new.
If what you’re doing isn’t working, then it’s time for something new.
If you’ve believed all things are set in stone, it’s time to think again, and time for something new.
That’s not to say that there isn’t good in most things in our lives—they’re there for a reason—but once we figure out what that reason is and why those things are there, we well might outgrow them. We tend to stick with what we know, what we are doing because it’s, well, comfortable and known, and stepping into the unknown is daunting, scary and uncomfortable. But here’s the thing: If something in our lives isn’t working, unless we change something—try something different—we’re going to continue to have the same results. What isn’t working isn’t going to suddenly start working.
So whatever it might in our lives that isn’t working, or is wrong, we can get a different outcome by recognizing that it’s time for something new. Elmore Leonard did at age 60.
For those of us not yet that age, we can get a head start by learning from his experience. It worked out well for him. He’s been one of the most influential writers of our time. Why did it work for him?
Because he realized it was time for something new and then acted on it. He wrote books that will entertain, guide and share insights for generations to come.
In doing so, he’s shared that life lesson with the rest of us. Now we can all look at our lives and ask ourselves what’s working and what’s not. Then we too are positioned to recognize if it’s time for something new!
